Everyone who has been to Halong Bay will tell you to go on a cruise and do what everybody else is doing. On the other side of the area, Halong City gives every traveler countless of opportunities to rediscover the history and culture of how it came to be a World Heritage Site and a New World Wonder.

We’ve traveled the remote parts of the city and listed below the top things you should do when visiting Halong City:

1. Eat Cha Muc

Every city and town in Vietnam is known for something. As for the city of Halong, this place is well renowned for its specialty food called Cha Muc (Chả Mực). Cha Muc or Squid Balls (Squid Cake) in English is famous here as the area is surrounded by water where you can find squid being sold almost everywhere. Squid can encounter in many other places across Vietnam but the type of squid used to make Halong Squid Cake is unique to this locality. So, the exotic flavor of Squid Cake should definitely be sampled when coming here.

With its jaw-dropping price tag (90 Billion VND or 43 Million USD), Quang Ninh Officials have built one of the most well structured and modernly designed government-owned buildings in the country.

2. Visit the Quang Ninh Museum

With its jaw-dropping price tag (90 Billion VND or 43 Million USD), Quang Ninh Officials have built one of the most well structured and modernly designed government-owned buildings in the country. Quang Ninh Museum showcases the history of Halong City & Halong Bay and the different eras it has gone through from the Pre-Colonial times up until the country’s Independence in 1975.

Additional Tip: Make sure you make a visit at the Quang Ninh Library as well just next to the main building.

3. Explore the Markets

Vietnamese markets are absolutely the liveliest and busiest places in whichever city/town you visit. Being able to see how people buy and sell various local produce to each other and eat traditional Vietnamese food on the side, the Halong I Market is a must see when visiting Halong City.
