Tourists often know Halong as a bay area but in fact, this top-notch tourist destination has a complicated geographical territory with Halong City as the land region and Halong Bay as the gulf region. In the sea, Halong Bay area is not simply 01 bay but includes 03 different bays: Halong Bay in the center, Lan Ha Bay in the south and Bai Tu Long Bay in the west. These 03 bays form a vast gulf region with over 3,000 islets. In the land, Halong City is divided into two parts: East Halong and West Halong. While western part (Bai Chay area) is an animated tourism zone as many have known, eastern part (Hon Gai) is an industrial zone with bustling city life. The city borders Halong Bay to the south with a 20 kilometer coastline. As the cultural, economical and political centre of Quang Ninh Province, Halong City is where most of official buildings and other commercial activities are concentrated.

Though geographically belong to Hai Phong province, the island is only 25 kilometers away from downtown Halong. As the biggest and fully inhabited island in the archipelago, Cat Ba Island is divided into two fully separated parts: the Cat Ba Town alive with tourism activities and the Cat Ba National Park distinctive with rugged jungle and diverse bio-system.
